The Unity
Quartet Experiences Their First SonShine
Gospel Cruise!
February 9, 2008
Hello everyone,
We just returned from our cruise to the
Bahamas and had a fabulous trip. We got home
Thursday evening.
Our bus leaked so much oil going down that
we left it with a mechanic and flew home.
The mechanic thinks it will be ready by the
weekend so Doyle and Randy will fly down to
get it. Randy and Doyle said if they
decided to advertise the bus for sale, they
could say “318 diesel engine gets 35 miles
to the gallon……… OF OIL”. Doesn’t that
sounds like something they would say?
We had great response from our audience and
enjoyed all the groups very much.
This was the first cruise for Ron, Randy,
Doyle and all the wives but Mark and Barbara
are pros. They have been several
times.
Going on a cruise is the way to really take
a vacation. It was just fabulous.
We didn’t have a hint of sickness.
Unless you looked out at the water you
didn't know you were moving. We had
chapel every morning from 9 until 10:30.
There were usually 3 to 4 groups who sang
and then a speaker. At night the
singing started around 4:30 or 5 pm until
around 8:00. I think there were about
15 groups but they didn’t all sing every
night. The M.C. for the singing was a
great singer and a comedian, he kept us in
stitches. One night there was a
variety show that Unity preformed in.
That was so funny; they sang “There’s a Hole
in the Bottom of the Sea”. Doyle did
the verses and the other backed him up.
Down home corn, ha ha .
Our dinner was at 8:30. We had the
same waiter and his assistant each night so
you got to know them. All the waiters
would sing and do things to entertain us.
There was always a show at 10:30. We
went to several of them. The Carnival
dancers and singers were great plus food 24
hours a day. There was golf on the top
deck and many activities.
Unity has been invited to go next year to
the Virgin Islands. That’s Jan 31st.
2009. Please consider making plans to
join us.
We went on shore at Freeport and Nassau.
We took a tour in Nassau and our guide was a
walking encyclopedia. They speak
English just like we do. 85% of that
island is Baptist. The other 15% is
Catholic. He told us the black folks
preferred the Baptist services because of
the singing, shouting and spirituality.
Catholic services did not appeal to them.
They have no industries/factories.
Everything except fruit is imported. Gas is
4 to 5 dollars per gallon and milk about 7
dollars. The average income is only
15,000.00 per year so the wife also has to
work. They have three different
classes of folks like we do; very poor,
middle class and rich. The guide
(Perry) drove through each of the areas.
People depend on tourism, banking,
hospitals, grocery stores etc. for
employment. He also took us to
“Paradise Island”. Wow! what a place.
The hotel was build as though it is the lost
city of Atlantis and has risen out of the
water. They have one suite that rents
for $25,000.00 per night and you have to
rent it a minimum of 7 days. Bill
Gates, Tiger Woods, Oprah etc. have stayed
there. Hand blown glass chandeliers
that were One Million dollars each. I
asked the guide about pollution because the
water was just so clear and blue; he said we
don’t have any.
Their jails are REAL punishment. They
sleep on the floor without a mattress for a
few years. After that they do get a
mattress but it goes on the floor too.
There are 4 to 5 people per cell and it’s
the size of an 8 X 10 room. A bucket
is their toilet and it gets emptied every 6
hours. You would not want to go there again
once you get out. Anyone who has been
in jail is not allowed to leave the island.
They will not let their criminals go to any
other country. That should be the rule
for every country.
Well I guess that is enough for now.
We hope you will join us next year for the
Virgin Islands 7 day cruise.
We love you all,
